According to the structure that has yet to be approved by the KHL
executive board, each team will have 60 games in the upcoming regular season. 52
of those games will be played according to the following schedule: 24 games
with teams of the same division (2 home and 2 away games), 14 games with teams
of the other division of the same conference (7 home and 7 away games overall)
and 14 games with teams with teams of the opposite conference (7 home games
with teams of one division and 7 away games – of the other division). Another 8
additional games will be played: 4 of them within the same conference (2 home
and 2 away games) and the other 4 – with teams of the opposite conference (2
home and 2 away games as well). The opponents for these matches will be
determined according to geographical and competition principle. Availability of
the arenas will also be taken into consideration.
To illustrate the structure, let us take the reigning champion Metallurg
Magnitogorsk. Magnitka will meet the members of Kharlamov division 4 teams each
(2 home, 2 away games). The other 7 teams in the Eastern Conference will square
off against champs two times each (1 home, 1 away game). Then, Metallurg will
take on the teams representing Bobrov division in 7 home games and representing
Tarasov division – in 7 away games. Additional 8 matches will see Metallurg
lock horns with other teams of the Eastern Conference (2 home and 2 away games)
and the Western Conference (also 2 home and 2 away games). Metallurg will take
on Dynamo Moscow and CSKA at the Romazan Arena and will be the guests in
Saint-Petersburg and Helsinki when they are going to take on SKA and Jokerit
respectively.
In case the structure is approved by the board, the calendar of the
upcoming 7th KHL season will be compiled shortly.
