Nizhny Governor Cup. Failed start of tourney for Traktor
Vasily Demchenko began the match as #1 goalie. Khlystov, Kostromitin, Bulis,
Panov and Mosharov were benched for this game.
As befits the hosts, Torpedo began the match with a flurry of offence. Demchenko saved Traktor after a
close-range shot by Yarkko Immonen. After that the opponents
started checking one another left and right, which resulted in several
penalties. Traktor successfully killed off the first one. As soon as the
five-on-five continued, Andrey Popov had a terrific chance on goal,
but former Chelyabinsk favorite Georgiy Gelashvili saved Torpedo from a
sure-fire goal. Gelashvili was on hand once again couple of minutes later when
he made a pad save after Igor Cherkasov fired a decent shot on goal.
Just moments later, Traktor was once again left shorthanded, and this time the
puck found its way into Traktor’s goal. However, after careful consideration officials
had waived the goal off. Nonetheless, Torpedo was able to score a legal goal
before the horn at the hands of Mikhail Grigoryev.
At the start of the second Torpedo squeezed the goal out of nothing – Wojtek Wolski found himself alone in attacking zone and, without much
thought, fired a carcinogenic one-timer that found the back of the net. A
little bit later on Mokin could
finally break Traktor’s goal silence – Gelashvili did not allow him to do that. After Traktor killed off a rather controversial
penalty by Klimontov, a brawl broke
out as Cherkasov and Zharkov decided to resort to a
fistfight to settle their differences. The fight was tied, and this boosted
away team’s confidence. Before the second period final buzzer Traktor acquired
a PP chance, but despite several chances on goal, the score remained intact.
Traktor began the period in power play, and finally, after couple dozens of
accurate passes, Kyle Wilson finally unsealed Gelashvili with a quality one-timer.
Three minutes later AK-46 fired his
trademark slapshot to the far upper corner of the net to cut down the goal
margin to minimum. As the game heated up, Andrey Popov got hit in the head and spent
a lot of time lying on the ice. During these seconds Torpedo scored their fourth.
Despite Traktor’s coaching staff feverish protests, the goal was deemed legal.
Before the horn, hosts reestablished the three goal margin, and that was it for
tonight’s game. Two five, Traktor suffers defeat.
