2015 Governor Cup. Magnitka to play in gold medal game
Yekaterinburg team looked better at the start of the
game; their confidence resulted in a breakaway chance and two straight
penalties for Metallurg. Unfortunately for Avto, they were unable to capitalize
on this chance. Closer to the end of the period, things changed drastically;
this time Magnitka had two-man advantage, and as soon as the fourth man hit the
ice, Danis Zaripov found the back of
the net after a long string of passes.
Once again, Avtomobilist started off rather confidently, regularly entering the attacking zone, but most of the shots hid no danger, and goalie Ilya Samsonov turned all of them away. Young Samsonov was solid during his team’s shorthanded play; and his confidence seemingly charged Magnitka players to take some action, and boy did they ever. When Avtomobilist had a power play,Timkin stole the puck and spurted away for a two-on-one along with Osala, and the latter beat Jakub Kovar from close range.
Avtomobilist put even heavier pressure on Magnitka at the top of the third twenty. The red-and-white almost built a settlement in the attacking zone, peppering Samsonov with shots. Finally, four minutes before the horn Alexander Chernikov was able to pull one back and give his team hope. With fans of both teams rallying their favorites on, Metallurg managed to hang onto the lead and seal the deal with an empty-netter by Wojtek Wolski.
Thus, Metallurg takes on Avangard in tomorrow’s gold medal game, while Traktor is slated to face Avtomobilist to decide the fate of the third place.
