When seconds matter
Injury sustained by Pavel Francouz prompted the coaching staff to place Alexander Danilishin as Demchenko’s substitute. The defensive lineup
remained intact, but the same cannot be said about the attacking lines. Thus, the
top line strictly consisted of foreign players, namely Pare, Bolduc and Ruzicka. Chistov replaced Glinkinin the second line; Osnovin was moved
to the third one to play along Mokin and Yakutsenya.
Before the game, a personal jersey of Viktor Shuvalov was hoisted to the top of the arena. Shuvalov became the eighth Traktor legend to have achieved this honor.
Traktor spent more than half of the period in the attacking zone, but Sibir was better in another aspect of the game, which is speed and quick movement from defense to attack. Therefore, the first twenty could be named the goalies’ period; Demchenko saved the black-and-white from a sure fire goal with a stellar glove save. His counterpart Salak made two huge saves, thwarting the attempts on goal by Semyon Kokuyov and Martin Ruzicka.
After an on par performance in the first period, Traktor knocked it out of the park in the second stanza. Five minutes into the period, the never-growing-old Deron Quint began the attack from the defensive zone, Chistov got the puck along the boards, and Cap found Q with a scintillating pass. All Deron had to do was send the rubber into the net, which he did. After the goal, Traktor’s momentum died down a bit, and Sibir had several chances to tie the game up. However, Demchenko was the unsung hero of the period as he turned away anything that could have gone in. After a little bit, the pendulum swung back to Traktor’s side, and moments before the buzzer Artyom Borodkin had the empty net in front of him but could not hit it.
The black-and-white did everything they could to hang on to the winning score. Demchenko was brilliant in between the pipes, and even when the puck crossed the line of his net, it was not without a foul. The game was slowly coming to an end; Sibir pushed the envelope and pulled the goalie some 90 seconds before the horn. In a six on five situation, Pare and Ruzicka were two on one against a Sibir D-man, but something went wrong, and the following attack ended in a tying goal scored by Damir Zhafyarov. This sucked the life out of the crowd, and the OT went almost to the sound of crickets. As everyone was preparing for the shootouts, Stepan Sannikov put together a solo effort and gave visitors a two-point victory.
