Chase down and leave behind
The only change made to Traktor lineup was Klimontov replacing Shinin. Plus, the Pestunov line became the nominal top one.
Sochi players moved quicker around the ice early on and seized the initiative. Just within the first few minutes, Demchenko made several stops, and the first time Traktor delivered the puck toward Gavrilov’s net was around six-minute mark. Throughout the period, hosts took a total of 13 shots on goal, but none of them was particularly dangerous, and two zeroes were on the board at the end of one.
Traktor was left shorthanded early in the second but still had a chance on goal when Rybakov skated from around the net to the crease; unfortunately, Traktor’s best goalscorer could not beat Andrei Gavrilov. During the next Sochi power play, our good old buddy Andrei Kostitsyn was close to scoring the opening goal of the game. However, Vasili Demchenko had another opinion as he made a highlight reel save. Nonetheless, the ever-mounting pressure had to find a release, and hosts eventually scored the opener. Nikolai Zherdev hit the near corner while one of his teammates was blocking Demchenko’s view. Just five minutes later, Sochi doubled their lead; Yevgeni Skachkov (another former Traktorian) upset Demchenko. However, the black-and-white quickly pulled one back when Andrei Popov hit a terrific wrist shot that found the back of the net. Traktor got the momentum on their side, and just seven seconds before the buzzer Artyom Borodkin tied this one up.
A power play for Traktor five minutes into the third twenty could have given visitors the lead, and Rybakov line was closer than anyone to scoring the go-ahead goal, but either they were unlucky in finishing stages of attacks or Gavrilov saved HC Sochi from trouble. Around mid-period mark, Ilya Krikunov hit the post. Before the horn, the boys in black-and-white jerseys had another power play opportunity, but all to no avail.Two-two after three, and an OT ensued.
After a scoring chance-less overtime, it was time for the opponents to determine the winner in shootouts. In a rare occurrence, Traktor scored all of their three attempts while Demchenko was able to stop a Kostitsyn attempt, which was enough for the black-and-white to get two points.
