Traktor coaching staff decided to switch goalies for
this bout as Demchenko was the
starting goaltender, Danilishin –
his backup. For whatever reason, Pavel Francouz was left off the lineup.
Fun and excitement. Those are the two words that perfectly sum up the first period. Both goalies were juking and jiving to try and keep the attackers at bay. Konstantin Barulin saved visitors after two great shots by Novak and Gubarev. Vasili Demchenko, on his part, denied our good ole friend Andrei Kostitsyn on a breakaway chance. Something had to give, and boy, did it ever! Traktor delivered a flurry, scoring three goals within the span of 90 seconds. For an appetizer, Andrei Pervyshin scored his first goal in Traktor. The main course in the form of a beautiful wrister by Andrei Popov followed. Finally, the icing on the cake was a regular goal by Semyon Kokuyov who found his chance on the crease.
Fun and excitement? You have seen nothing yet. Traktor started off the second twenty like there was no intermission; Penkovsky could not outplay Andrei Gavrilov (Sochi backup goalie) in the clear. Then, Gubarev somehow some way was unable to complete a nice combination. Who knows, if the score became four or even five nothing, HC Sochi might have not gotten any glimmer of hope. However, it went down just the way with did. Visitors completed an improbable comeback, and they needed only 20 seconds more to do that. Lyuduchin pulled one back on a breakaway; then, Kostitsyn upset his former team with a blistering slap shot during a counter. Finally, Paigin tied the game up with a stiff slapper from the point. ‘That’s it for the period, right?’ those who did not see the game might ask. The answer would be a resounding ‘no’. Three minutes later, Osnovin converted a power play and scored the goal that has been long overdue. In the very next shift, Yegor Martynov extended the goal differential to two after scoring his first (and also long-awaited) season goal.
Third period, although goalless, was also fun to watch. Visitors at times kicked in a fifth gear, and Demchenko and Co had to muster all of their ability to keep a favorable goal margin intact. Once, when even Vasya was unable to save the black-and-white, the iron came to his aid. Closer to the final buzzer, Demchenko made a couple of highlight reel-worthy saves, which prompted the music man at the arena to turn on the song called ‘Vasya’ performed by the band ‘Bravo’. Five three, Traktor gets the second straight win and is now on a two-week break.
