Kings of shootouts
Two changes took place in Traktor’s lineup. Yegor Martynov and Filip Novak missed this game and were
replaced by Nikita Khlystov and Alexander Shinin respectively. The attacking lines remained intact; Pavel Francouz was the
starting goalie.
Visitors had some advantage in the first twenty. Neftekhimik controlled the puck in the attacking zone, taking quite a few shots, but Pavel Francouz was impeccable. The black-and-white also had to kill off a penalty, which they did, and then the tables were turned. Traktor started to appear more frequently in Neftekhimik’s zone, and one of the counterattacks resulted in a solo effort by Osnovin who tore through the wing and beat Alexander Sudnitsyn glove side.
The second period was all about power game as both opponents tallied a total of 20 hits. Traktor had three power play chances during one of which Martin Ruzicka hit the bar. Neftekhimik continued piling up the pressure on the crease, and just two minutes before the horn Jeff Taffe scored a power play goal in a typical North American manner, deflecting the puck into the net. Officials had to watch the replay just to be sure that the goal was legal, and eventually it was deemed just that.
Hosts completely dominated Neftekhimik throughout the third period. Traktor had a slew of scoring opportunities; several times the puck whiffed inches wide or high of the net, and sometimes Sudnitsyn saved visitors. Pavel Francouz put a on top-notch performance as well, keeping the score tied several times. As a result, OT.
The additional five minutes rolled along without too many chances on goal. Once again, a Traktor game had to be decided in the shootout series, and when this happens, it often spells trouble for the black-and-white’s opponents. This proved to be the case this time around as Francouz once again saved all three attempts of the opposing team, and Yakutsenya gave Traktor a two-point win.
