A loss to SKA prompted several changes on the lineup. Martin Ruzicka was benched and replaced by Mikhail Mokin who last
played for Traktor more than a month ago. Plus, Traktor’s coaching staff
reunited Alexander Rybakov with Gubarev and Kokuyov. Osnovin was placed in the second line,
thus moving Pestunov to the top one
to play alongside Glinkin and Yakutsenya.
Spartak started off the bout in an active manner and took a couple of stiff shots stopped by Demchenko. A little bit later on, Igor Levitsky had a sure-fire scoring chance but could not convert a pass to the far post into a goal. The black-and-white then started to come around, but an untimely penalty thwarted their momentum. It was during these two minutes that Spartak scored the go-ahead goal; Genoway took a slapshot from the point, and the puck was deflected into the net by Konstantin Glazachev. Shortly after that, visitors’ fourth line consisting of young players gained a power play chance for Chelyabinsk team, but other than a couple of decent shots, nothing came out of it.
The black-and-white jumped right into action and three minutes in organized a heavy onslaught on Yevgeni Ivannikov’s net, but the goal came just a little bit after that. A terrific tic-tac-toe ended in a Yakutsenya goal, but the real star of this moment was Alexander Rybakov; go to KHL official website and watch his laser-precision pass and try not to be amazed by that. However, just four minutes later a horrible defensive blunder by Vladimir Denisov resulted in Glazachev giving Spartak the lead to not give it up for the entire duration of the game. Soon, Deron Quint could have tied the matchup at two, but Ivannikov blocked his shot with a pad. In the very next attack, Yaroslav Dyblenko increased the red-and-white’s lead. Closer to the buzzer, Traktor accrued a PP opportunity, and Glinkin had a tremendous scoring chance, but his shot went inches wide of the target.
Seemingly gassed out early in the third, Traktor allowed the fourth goal early on, scored by Vyacheslav Leshchenko. With absolutely nothing to lose now, the black-and-white rushed forward and earned another shot at power play. However, this only led to a Spartak shorthanded goal; Dyblenko scored his second of the night and prompted Anvar Gatiyatulin to take a timeout and swap Demchenko with Francouz. That was all she wrote; five one, Spartak beats Traktor for the first time since 2011 while the cold streak of Traktor increases to three games in a row.
