Only
a handful of changes took place in the black-and-white lineup. Alexander Chernikov was replaced by Semyon Afonasyevsky. This vacated a
spot in the fourth line, and it was occupied by Denis Mosharov. Artyom Penkovsky replaced Vitali Kravtsov as the 13th forward. Finally, Pavel Francouz was given a day off,
and Vasili Demchenko was the number
one goalie for this bout.
Avangard looked a lot better at the top of this game as the hosts behaved truly as it befitted the hosts, spending plenty of time in the attacking zone and making Demchenko and company exert a lot of energy. Sometime later, Avangard collected a power play opportunity, but the black-and-white lived up to their reputation as the second best penalty-killing team in the entire league. Having killed it off, visitors started their encroachments on Furch’s net. Czech goaltender, however, showcased enough skill to rob Ilya Zinovyev, Yuri Petrov and Derek Roy of goals, and both teams headed to a break without anything to brag about score-wise.
This particular hockey game carried on in the same vein in the second twenty, with one exception – Avangard scored two quick goals. First, a sudden deflection by Pyotr Khokhryakov caught Vasili Demchenko off guard. Then, a quick pass from behind the net led to the second goal scored by Maxim Pestushko. Somewhere in between those goals came an injury suffered by Alexei Kruchinin, and it seemed as though this was a serious issue. Still, visitors managed to take away the advantage and tried to pull one back. For instance, Alexander Sharov hit the post on one of the exchanges; Semyon Afonasyevsky did not put enough spin on the puck etc. When the time came, Vasili Demchenko kept hope alive for Traktor, robbing Pestushko of his second goal of the game. Both teams could have capitalized on power play chances, but the score remained intact.
The third twenty started off exactly like the second one. Another defensive lapse by Traktor defensemen resulted in Avangard’s third goal scored by Ilya Mikheyev. At that point, it seemed as if the game was over right then and there, but an out-of-nowhere goal by Nikolai Belov gave Traktor fans a glimmer of hope. Couple of minutes later, Dmitri Pestunov did not take a shot and lost a decent scoring opportunity. Avangard responded with a two-on-one that was left unconverted but Anton Burdasov. Another chance on goal was spent by Alexander Shinin who could not hit the flying puck. The black-and-white fought until the last drop of blood, but the three-one score turned out to be final.
