Dmitry Ryabykin: I know how to stop Avangard
What was the deciding factor
in the series against Barys?
It was the performance of the goaltenders.
It was basically Garnett vs. Yeremeyev/Poluektov. Michael made fewer mistakes,
that’s why we emerged victorious.
Which match of the seven was the toughest one?
From my personal experience, I can say that the seventh game is the most
difficult one; game 7 against Barys was a living proof of this statement. There’s
a lot of pressure in matches like these.
Are you excited about facing Avangard?
I don’t know really. What I do know, however, is that we’re in for a fight.
Do you think you might have an advantage in this series because you know how
your former teammates play?
I don’t think it could be called an advantage. Of course I know many of
Avangard’s players and what to expect of them, but in the same time they know
me well too, so we are on equal footing here.
Did Valery Belousov ask you to give a piece of advice to your teammates on
how to play against Avangard?
No he didn’t, and I don’t think he will. He knows what to do himself; he’s
a veteran coach with great experience and flair for the game. If the team needs
my help though, I won’t refuse.
So you know what to do against Avangard?
Of
course, but I won’t tell you. Most importantly we have to give it their all on
the ice. If we give Avangard a chance to win, they will capitalize with no
hesitation.
What’s the general mood in the team?
We are very upbeat now; after a long tiring series with Barys a victory gave us
some extra strength. We are eager to overcome anyone who stands in the way.
How important is the home ice advantage in this series?
The reality is this now – anyone can win any given match, whether it be at
home or on the road, so it doesn’t make much difference. Of course it’s more exciting
to play on home ice and feel the support of the crowd; fans’ support means a
lot in playoffs.
Are you going to meet with your former teammates outside the rink?
Not sure; I think I will be focused on hockey, not on going out.
Do you think Omsk fans will welcome you warmly? It’s not often that fans
like the players who left their beloved team.
Omsk fans have always been and are great and knowledgeable in hockey. They
know why I left Avangard and understand everything. I would be glad to see
them, but I’m not sure if they have the same feelings towards me.
Do you know where you will spend the next season?
No, not yet. Traktor has not offered me a new contract yet. I think this issue will be
resolved after the playoffs.
