Gagarin Cup Finals. Next year, right?
Andrey Popov returned to the ice, taking Nikolay Lemtyugov’s place on
the line-up.
First period
Traktor looked amazing in the first period, which is understandable considering that Dynamo would have another chance if they lost the game while for Traktor it was all or nothing, just like in game 5. First off Nesterov fired a cannonball of a shot from the red line, then Glinkin’s shot was blocked. Mid-period the business has picked up even more; Mosalyov was stopped by Garnett, Popov and Chistov had similar scoring chances – Yeremenko was solid on both exchanges. This could not continue for eternity, and the goal finally happened when during Traktor’s power play Quint made another trip to the attacking zone and passed the puck to Yakutsenya; Maksim did not leave Yeremenko a chance with a close-range shot.
Second period
Four minutes into the period yet another Traktor’s player got injured; this time it was Yegor Dugin who seemingly followed Katichev’s footsteps (Yevgeny went to the locker room in the first period) but was able to return to the ice several minutes later. Dynamo slowly took over the initiative; mid-period Novak had a sure-fire goal, or at least it seemed so, but Garnett had another opinion on that. Traktor returned the favor with a two-on-one; Glinkin utilized his teammate as a means of distraction for a D-man and tried to hit the goal by himself, but missed. And then Traktor was jinxed; Maksim Yakutsenya and Deron Quint hit the post within the span of two minutes. Get a goal or allow one, they say; Sergey Soin tied the match after a bustle at the crease. Dynamo did not stop at that and quickly pulled ahead at the hands of Dmitry Pestunov. A bit flabbergasted, Traktor precipitated to try to tie it up ASAP; Kuznetsov had a breakaway – Yevgeny did everything right, sending the puck between Yeremenko’s pads, but the hockey apparatus did not go in. The jinx stayed on close to the buzzer when Razin hit the post for the third time in one period (!!!).
Third period
Standing at the edge of the abyss was Traktor in the third period. At the top of it Kostitsyn and Popov squandered very good scoring opportunities. Nonetheless, the home team put on a great effort and tied the game; Kostitsyn executed a damn near extraterrestrial pass to Kontiola who ran for a breakaway and, without trying to invent anything, sent the puck right into the top corner. It was all seemingly coming down to the first overtime in the series, and it eventually did, but before the horn Kokarev had a chance to silence the crowd in attendance, but failed to convert a one-on-one.
Overtime
It turned out to be the first and the last OT of this amazing series. Both teams failed to capitalize on their power play chances, but when Kuznetsov already quit the sin bin and was rushing to help his exhausted partners, Dynamo put a finishing touch to the 2012/2013 season. Aleksey Tsvetkov scored the golden goal and gave Dynamo the second consecutive Gagarin Cup, while Traktor, proud in defeat, showed the best result in team’s long and storied 66-year history. Third place in 2012, runner-ups in 2013; there is only one thing left to do in 2014, right?
